City Information:
Kiev is 1500 years old. Today it is undoubtedly stated. But such an opinion wasn’t accepted all the time. The majority of the historians of the XIX century refused to accept the legend about Kyi, Shcheka and Horiva. Some sources said Kiev was founded by sarmat tribes in BC times and so it is over 2000. German historians said Kiev was founded by the Goths in III AD. The most enthusiastic ones managed to find the city on Ptolemei’s maps (II AD). Only in the XX century mainly thanks to archeological excavations the opinion that the city was founded by the Slavs and that Kyi wasn’t that much of a legendary personage and that the capital of Ukraine was founded between late V – early VI centuries was more or less accepted.
Kiev has always served its main and most important function as the religious centre of the Russian Empire. Mitropolitans had been moved to Moscow long time ago but thousands of pilgrims came to Kiev annually. The city served as a mecca for the Orthodox Christians and it impressed with the amount of churches, monasteries, but the main sacred place is Kiev-Pecher Monastery and Sofia’s Cathedral. In the Monastery there have always been more relics than in any other temple in the world. But Uspenski Cathedral is considered to be the main treasure of the Monastery. Many pilgrims started to do the sights of Kiev starting with the Cathedral. Common citizens of the Russian Empire would remember the mighty city for the rest of their lives.
