City Information:
Minsk is a political, cultural and economic centre of the Republic of Belarus.
Minsk was first mentioned in written form in "The story of by-gone years" in 1067 in times of legendary chronicler Nestor. Mensk, Menesk is mentioned there in connection with internecine discords that led to the battle between Prince of Polotsk Vseslav and sons of Kyiv Prince Yaroslav the Wise: "In the year 6576 (1067) … in severe cold, having gathered the warriors started Iziaslav, Sviatoslav, Vsevolod their march against Vseslav. And approached they Minsk, and locked minsk-citizens the city. But the brothers defeated Minsk, killed all males and took women and children as their loot and moved to the River Nemiga. Vseslav went to meet them. They met on Nemiga on March 3rd; the snow was great, and the troops attacked each other, and there was a severe battle, and many people were killed…". Yaroslavichi won the battle, Vseslav fled. These events were also mentioned in "The story about Igor’s regiment" which is the old-russian literary monument.
But it is obvious that the city grew much earlier. It is more likely that Minsk grew as a city on the spot of one east-slavonic settlements, that existed in IX-X century.
Since 1991 company "Malvina" has been working in Minsk.
