City Information:
The name of the city Samara, according to one of the versions, comes from the Greek words “SAMAR” which means “merchant” and “RA” – the ancient name of the river Volga. According to another version, the city got its name from the river Samara name that flew into Volga near the city. In the Turkic language that wandered in the Volga area steppes Samara stands for the steppe river.
Metropolitan of Moscow and the Whole Russia St. Alexi is considered to be the spiritual patron of the city. St. Alexi is St. Sergi Radonezhski’s friend and mentor, one of the inspirers in Kulikov Victory, Dmitri Donskoi the Great’s educator. Under the legend in August 6th, 1357 on the way to the Golden Horde St. Alexi stopped for the night at monk-hermit’s hut near the Samar natural boundaries (close to the fortress-to-be). There he foretold the city foundation and its future prospective.
In 1708 under Peter Ist Samara was the 9th city in Kazan province and since 1719 was annexed to Astrakhan province. At those times there were 210 dwelling houses in the city.
In 1851 Samara becomes the principal town of the province with the population of 15 thousand people. At that time the province was in the leading position in wheat crop in The Russian Empire. Trade in colonial, manufactured and other goods was activated at 375 trade-stores. Every week markets were held on the territory of the two squares. Three fairs were held in a year’s run – Cathedral (in autumn), in honour of Exaltation and the Kazan (in summer) that ran for 10 days. By the end of the 19th century there were 46 plants and factories in Samara where 25 thousand regular workers worked. In 1900 the first power station was built. By 1917 in Samara 90 industrial enterprises, mechanical bakery, elevator with the capacity of 3,5 million poods of grain were acting. Since the city had a favourable geographic situation, Donbass and Ural were turning into the main suppliers of metal for the industry. It was the basis for the growth in number of big machine-building and metal-working enterprises.
Since 2002 trade representation "Malvina Povolzhie" has been working in Samara.
