St.-Petersburg was founded in 1703 and in 2003 celebrated its 300th anniversary. In spite the city is relatively young its history is reach and exciting. Starting with Peter the Great’s "Paradise" time and his "Northern Venice" up to modern times the city has had many interesting facts in its biography.
Since the very first days of its existence Petersburg has been the city of myth and mystery. One hardly can find such a young city that would be associated with so many unbelievable stories, astonishing legends and mysterious traditions. Unique is the history of the city. It is depicted not only in numerous rumours, but also is embodied in images portrayed ages ago. All complexities of the city development are materialized in its massive palaces and temples, in park ensembles. In spacious avenues, in winding narrow side-streets with massifs of skyscrapers dating from XVIII-XIX centuries - in everything the past of the city is reflected.
Like any other big city Petersburg reveals its history to each interested and attentive visitor. Outstanding historians and people of art – commanders and courtiers, princes and tsars, artists and poets, writers and adventurers – lived here and walked along these roadways. You are welcome to see Peter the Great and his daughter Elizabeth’s "Northern Palmira", the city that thanks to Katherine the Great became the centre of The Grand Russian Empire, the city where Lomonosov, Derzhavin, Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevski and many other outstanding people of Russia worked on their masterpieces. Many people come to learn the history of Petersburg and see the “white nights” of the mysterious "Northern Venice" and the Admiralty and Petropavlovsk Fortress spires glowing in the dusks.
